Dear ,

Here is a new Progressive Secretary letter. You will be able to edit your name, address, etc. in the next step.

This action is motivated by the GOP's announcement that it wants to cut the food stamp program so that defense spending will not face cuts. The letter goes to the President and to Congress.

Don't increase defense spending on the backs of America's poor.

The latest Republican plan to reduce the deficit while maintaining defense spending slashes aid for poor Americans.

In a recent budget reconciliation memo, Republicans advocate extracting $80 billion from federal workers and $44 billion from health care. But they especially target food stamps, needed for adequate nutrition by more Americans than ever still reeling from the recession.

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) is one of the largest antipoverty efforts in the country, serving more than 46 million. In 2009, SNAP benefits reduced the severity of child poverty by 27.5 percent.

Americans must not take food from the needy to increase defense spending.

Sincerely,

Kathie Turner, Director
