Dear Progressive Secretary Supporter

Here is a new Progressive Secretary letter.

This letter supports actions by Human Rights Watch, Defending Rights and Dissent, and others opposing the confirmation of Gina Haspel as Director of the CIA. Her critics say that her involvement in torture, her role at a black-site prison in Thailand, and the destruction of evidence renders her unfit for the position.

Your letters will be sent to your Senators.

Gina Haspel should not be CIA director.

Haspel oversaw the waterboarding of at least one suspect at a black-site prison in Thailand. She knew or should have known that another suspect, Abu Zubaydah, had been tortured there.

As chief of staff to Jose Rodriguez when he ran the CIA’s National Clandestine Service, Haspel lobbied to destroy the tapes documenting this torture. Senior White House officials objected to their destruction; Attorney General Gonzales told the CIA general counsel not to destroy them. Haspel then wrote the memo authorizing their destruction.

Ms. Haspel’s lack of respect for the law and her willingness to circumvent it when convenient or to hide her illegal activities makes her unfit as Director of the CIA. Please vote “NO” on her confirmation.
