Dear Progressive Secretary Supporter

Here is a new Progressive Secretary letter.

This letter supports an action by UltraViolet, an organization that works on a variety of issues and exists to create a cost for sexism and to achieve full equity for all women through culture and policy change.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has said that asylum was meant to protect people who fled their home countries “because of persecution based on fundamental things like their religion or nationality.” He said the immigration courts were “overloaded with fake claims.” He seems to imply that “gender” isn't “fundamental.”

Your letter will be sent to the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division.

Although this administration is questioning the legitimacy of asylum claims based on gender violence, it is essential to protect abused women and their children seeking refuge.

Attorney General Sessions’s views are rooted in the last century, when violence against women did not warrant state intervention. Since that time, we've determined that violence against women and others is a real and present danger for many people.

The earliest settlers came to this country searching for a haven from persecution. Even if we haven’t always lived up to that principle, we've striven to embody it.

Do not change the rule allowing victims of gender-based violence to claim refugee status in the United State. Reject Attorney General Sessions’s attempt to turn back time.
