Dear Progressive Secretary Supporter

Here is a new Progressive Secretary letter.

This letter supports actions by the United Farm Workers, Friends of the Earth, Pesticide Action Networkers, and others.

The bill essentially includes farm workers in the 1938 the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). It grants overtime protections to farm workers who work more than 40 hours a week. It also eliminates most remaining exemptions to the minimum wage for agricultural employers and continues to exclude family farms where employees are immediate family members of the employer.

The bill's supporters include the AFL-CIO, Earthjustice, Economic Policy Institute, Farmworker Justice, LCLAA, NAACP, SEIU, SPLC, UnidosUS, and others.

Your letter will be sent to your Senators and House member.

Please support the Fairness for Farm Workers Act.

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA, 1938) provided basic labor protections for workers, but excluded agricultural workers. That exclusion was rooted in racism and political pragmatism.

Sponsors of the FLSA gathered enough votes by appeasing southern states’ legislators who demanded the exclusion from coverage of agricultural and domestic workers. At the time, most farm workers in the South were African American.

The Fairness for Farm Workers Act remedies the injustices of the FLSA. It provides minimum wage and overtime pay to farm workers, phasing in those provisions over several years.

I urge you to vote “YES” when the Fairness for Farm Workers Act comes to the floor.
