Dear Progressive Secretary Supporter

Here is a new Progressive Secretary letter.

This letter supports actions by the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition of more than 200 organizations that includes various unions, and civil rights, religious, and legal associations. You can find a list of their members by clicking here

The letter asks the Senate to pass the “Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2019” (H.R. 1585), which the House passed in April.

We will send your letter to your Senators.

Please pass H.R. 1585, the “Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2019” (VAWA). The House has already done so.

VAWA provides a holistic approach to gender-based violence. Since its passage in 1994, rates of rape and sexual assault, domestic violence homicide, and nonfatal domestic violence have consistently decreased.

Additionally, in 2002, researchers at the University of North Carolina found that the law was fiscally cost-effective. Their cost-benefit analysis showed that implementation cost approximately $1.6 billion, but saved $14.8 billion in averted social costs (Clark, Biddle, & Martin, 2002).

VAWA established a previously nonexistent infrastructure to respond to domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking. Please ensure that these benefits continue.

Pass the “Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2019.”
