Dear Progressive Secretary Supporter

Here is another letter from Progressive Secretary.

This letter supports campaigns by Demand Progress, the Sierra Club, the Center for American Progress and others. It asks Congress to support H.R./S. 51, the “Washington, D.C. Admission Act.”

Washington, D.C. residents have the responsibility of citizenship (taxation, Selective Service, etc.) without the rights of citizenship. The “Washington, D.C. Admission Act.” seeks to remedy this injustice.

We will send your email messages to your Senators and Representative
.

Whatever happened to “No Taxation Without Representation?”

Washington D.C. residents pay more per capita to the federal government than any state, yet they have no Congressional votes. Patrick Henry would be appalled.

D.C. residents have the responsibilities (including taxation and Selective Service registration) without the rights and privileges of citizenship. The District doesn’t control its own budget, and Congress can overrule any laws it passes.

When Washington D.C. became the capital in 1800, its residents became second-class citizens. Congress can make amends by enacting the “Washington, D.C. Admission Act.”

In the most recent poll (2016), 86% of D.C. residents support statehood. Please do the same.

Support statehood for Washington, D.C. Vote for H.R/S. 51. It’s the right thing to do.
