Dear Progressive Secretary Supporter

Here is another letter from Progressive Secretary.

This letter supports campaigns by a wide variety of civil, human, and women’s rights organizations. It asks the Senate to pass H. J. Res. 17,  which will remove the arbitrary deadline for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). The requisite thirty-eight states have ratified the amendment.

We will send your email letters to your Senators. H. J. Res. 17 passed the House on March 17, 2021

Ninety-eight (98) years ago — 1923 — saw the first draft of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).

Since World War II, the United States has insisted that countries drafting constitutions include a statement prohibiting discrimination based on sex. Women in the U.S., however, still don’t have that protection.

The current ERA passed in 1972. It included an arbitrary ratification deadline, which Congress extended, but which has now elapsed.

In 2020, Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the ERA. Except for that unnecessary deadline, the amendment would be a part of the Constitution today.

There’s no good reason not to extend the ratification deadline and make the Equal Rights Amendment part of our Constitution. Please vote for H.J. Res.17.
