Dear Progressive Secretary Supporter

Here is another letter from Progressive Secretary.

This letter supports campaigns by the NAACP and various other voting rights organizations. It asks Congress to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, introduced in the House on August 17, 2021.

Under the original Voting Rights Act, municipalities with a history of discrimination had to get federal approval to change their voting laws. The Supreme Court gutted that requirement. The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act will restore this critical review process

Our democratic rights are under attack. Some states are making it harder to vote.

In the original Voting Rights Act, states and counties with a history of discrimination needed approval for new voting laws and regulations. That stopped thousands of dangerous provisions from taking effect.

But in 2013, the Supreme Court invalidated the “preclearance” provision. This ruling gave politicians the green light to attack voters’ rights, and they didn’t hesitate. The Brennan Center found that 49 states have introduced over 400 bills with provisions that make voting more difficult.

The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is essential to stop this war on voting rights. The Senate must pass it without delay.

Vote for H.R.4. Support our right to vote.
