Dear Progressive Secretary Supporter,
Here is another action alert from Progressive Secretary. This letter supports campaigns by Progress American, Social Security Works, Daily KOS, Demand Progress, and others. It asks Congress to improve Supplemental Security Income. For nearly 50 years, public policy forced disabled Americans and seniors to live in poverty. Please make long-overdue program improvements for those who depend on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) to meet their basic needs. Click here to send this letter or to learn more (you can edit the letter in the next step, if you wish).
Almost 8 million seniors and disabled Americans rely on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) through Social Security to meet their basic needs, including over 1 million children. They should not have to live in poverty.
We will send your email messages to your Senators and your Representative.
The maximum SSI benefit of $794/month is below the poverty level. The savings limit of $2,000/person or $3,000/couple is an inadequate cushion for emergencies. These outdated benefit levels must be increased.
Further, SSI reduces benefits for those who work—even when those reductions don’t increase the beneficiary’s income above $794/month. Small gifts from family or friends can also decrease benefits. These rules, too, must change.
Please make these essential improvements to the SSI program—through reconciliation or a stand-alone bill.
