Dear Progressive Secretary Supporter

Here is another opportunity to make your voice heard. Progressive Secretary is “Activism Made Easy.”

Our letter supports a campaign by Public Citizen opposing the purchase of Albertsons by Kroger, both grocery giants. The deal would create a single behemoth with immense market power, meaning higher food prices—already skyrocketing—and fewer choices for American consumers, especially those in rural and lower-income areas.

We will send your email messages to the Federal Trade Commission.

** These grocery companies would be included in the merger: Acme, Amigos, Baker’s, Balducci’s, Carrs, City Market, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Gerbes, Haggen, Harris Teeter, Jay C, Jewel-Osco, King Soopers, Kings Food Markets, Mariano’s, Market Street, QFC, Pavilions, Pay Less, Pick ‘n Save, Ralphs, Randalls, Ruler Foods, Safeway, Shaw’s, Smith’s, Star Market, Tom Thumb, United Supermarkets, and Vons.

Reject the proposed merger between grocery giants Kroger and Albertsons.

Grocery corporations took advantage of inflation to increase profits by artificially raising food prices — prices that rose 11% in the past year alone. This merger will leave Americans even more vulnerable to corporate price gouging.

Kroger-Albertsons promises to “spin-off” some of their grocery stores into separate entities. These “spin-offs” will supposedly compete with Kroger-Albertsons stores.

However, when Albertsons acquired Safeway, they “spun off” the least profitable stores.” Many of those “spin-offs” failed. Giant food deserts resulted, forcing people to travel long distances for groceries or rely on food banks. The financial costs of these food deserts are devastating to people in poor and rural districts.

The FTC must consider this history and reject the proposed merger
