16 Million Hungry Children in America Is Apparently Not Enough

Dear Friend:

U.S. citizen children are under attack once again.  The Farm Bill (S. 3240) hits the Senate floor this week, and Senator Sessions (R–AL) has submitted an unjust amendment to strip access to SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps) from the citizen children of undocumented immigrants.  This amendment is unnecessary and severely detrimental to the health of millions of kids.

This amendment goes much too far:  undocumented children and adults already do not qualify for SNAP.  The Sessions amendment would take food from the mouths of hungry citizen kids—and four out of five of those kids are Latino.  Moreover, everyone applying for SNAP benefits would be required to show proof of legal status, meaning that thousands of citizens who cannot readily furnish their original birth certificate would also be left without food assistance.  It can take from three to eight months to get a birth certificate from local county officials and cost up to $45 for a certificate, or $100 for a passport, prices which can be out of reach for low-income families.  SNAP has been a lifeline for many families, particularly during the economic recession.

Consider these facts:

  • There are currently 16 million children at risk of hunger in the U.S., and more than five million are Latino.  This amendment would add more hungry children to this count.
  • Up to 4.5 million U.S. citizen children who have at least one undocumented parent will lose their access to SNAP.
  • Latino children account for more than 80% of the children impacted by the Sessions amendment.
  • Poor children who participate in SNAP are less likely to suffer health and developmental problems—and the future well-being of our nation depends upon our kids growing up to become healthy adults.
Does the Senate really need more evidence to convince them to protect this program for hungry children?

“My name is ____ and I’m calling from [your home town].  As your constituent, I urge you to protect all children from hunger and vote against the Sessions amendment to the FARM BILL which would deny millions of U.S. citizen children food assistance. Also, say no to any proposals to 'block grant SNAP'; these proposals would eviscerate the program and prevent it from expanding when needed most.”

Thank you!
