Dear League Leader:
From conference calls to national Council over the past months, we heard you as you called on the LWVUS to share with Leagues sooner about plans and opportunities around major initiatives. To this end, we have taken action and have already emailed this message to all League presidents.
At a special meeting on July 28, 2011, the LWVUS/EF Board of Directors adopted Guidelines for Major In-State Initiatives. The Board adopted these Guidelines in response to constructive comments and valid concerns voiced by members regarding major in-state initiatives undertaken by the LWVUS/EF Board. The Guidelines outline communication and consultation procedures to state LWV leaders, local League leaders and notification of other members who should be informed of the initiatives.
On behalf of my colleagues on the LWUVS/EF Board, I thank you for your communications. If you have questions, please contact your national Board Liaison. At a time when the country needs the reasoned voice of the League of Women Voters more than ever, we thank you for your willingness to help advance that voice consistently and collectively from the community level to the national level.
The Clean Air Promise Gains Momentum (NEW)
Last week, the League and its partner organizations launched a citizen’s campaign to protect our public health. The Clean Air Promise offers everyone in our community – the public, business leaders and elected officials – a means to come together to do something for real people and real communities. The promise has received some great news coverage, and The Hill published a poignant op-ed by Ms. Allred. Please visit www.peoplenotpolluters.org to share your story, make the promise and send a message asking your elected officials to make the promise as well. You can also make the promise on our Facebook page.

Important Information about Prospective Volunteers for YOUR League! (NEW)
Because prospective League members often come to www.lwv.org looking for a way to get involved at the local level, the LWVUS has created an online registration form for individuals to submit. Once completed, the LWVUS will connect you with the prospective member by sending your local League president and membership chair an email with the individual’s name and contact information. Use this information to recruit interested individuals to be a part of your League!
LWVUS Membership Database Down AGAIN for Maintenance on August 14-15

Women's Equality Day Media Template Available (NEW)
August 26 will mark the 91st anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which gave full voting rights to women. Mark this milestone by putting out a media release, getting a proclamation issued by your local government, or holding an event. This is a day that is so important to our history and so strongly associated with the League that we should be visible! Find planning ideas here and a sample media release here.

Do You Need to Update Your Will?
Have you moved? Had a child? Gotten married recently? Or maybe there's a new grandchild or stepchild in your life? Any one of these major life events is reason enough to update your will. It is always important to stay in touch with your attorney regarding any changes in estate and probate law. While you're updating your plans, don't forget to include a gift for your favorite charities, like the League of Women Voters Education Fund – to strengthen the pillars of our democracy for years to come. If you have already included a gift for the LWV in your will or trust, but have not previously informed us, or if you have been thinking about setting up a gift that provides income, such as a charitable gift annuity, please contact the Development office by email or at 202-263-1355.
