Dear League Leader:
The response to our new website design has been overwhelmingly positive, and we appreciate the thoughtful comments and support coming in from our members! Now, we are continuing our work to further refine some areas and complete next steps, which we will share with you in the New Year.
We all know that no new product is a perfect fit right away. In fact, we have heard from some of you about challenges accessing the new website. One major cause could be the age of the Internet browser you are using. If it is a significantly older version, you will need to upgrade to a newer version as our new website was built to current web standards. This is often very easy to do and a good practice anyway. Here is a list of the most common browsers and the versions required for smooth operations: Internet Explorer higher than 7, Firefox higher than 3.6, and newer versions of Google Chrome and Safari. Unfortunately, AOL web browsers do not follow the web browser standards and can encounter issues on many websites. If you have questions or feedback, our League Geeks are prepared to help you. You may contact them online (choose “technical support”) or email LWVUS Board Member Norman Turrill at LWVTurrill@mac.com.
Program Planning Material Online (NEW)
Every two years state and local Leagues and ILO’s participate in the LWVUS Program Planning process by making recommendations concerning program issues – this is one of the ways we remain a grassroots organization. The Program Planning process is an important League tool for identifying issues for study, review and update or concurrence. Here is the guide to assist you in your January/February meetings on Program Planning. The deadline for submitting online program planning response forms is March 1, 2012.
Reminder for Convention Delegates (NEW)
In order to vote at Convention 2012, your League must have met its Per Member Payment (PMP) obligation in full for fiscal year 2011-12 (July 1, 2011-June 30, 2012), as well as for previous fiscal years. Leagues that are unable to fulfill their financial obligation and wish to vote at Convention 2012 may file a hardship claim with the LWVUS Board. Learn more about this process here.
Bylaws Amendments Due: March 1 (NEW)
One of the important pieces of business that national Convention delegates must consider is whether to amend the LWVUS Bylaws. Read this memo, outlining the process by which proposed amendments may be submitted and will be distributed to League leaders in advance of the national Convention.
EDUCATION FUND (Elections)
Elections: LWV of Florida President on MSNBC (NEW)
LWV of Florida President Dierdre Macnab was a guest on MSNBC’s Politics Nation with Al Sharpton last night. He has a recurring segment called Block the Vote, which has covered voter suppression over the last few months. Watch the segment here.
Elections: Voter Photo ID Suppresses the Vote (NEW)
Eighty-four-year-old Ruthelle Frank of Wisconsin was born at home and doesn’t have a birth certificate. She cannot get a photo ID without a birth certificate. The catch: she needs that certificate to vote! Read her story here.
Elections: NAACP Report on Impact of Voter Suppression Laws (NEW)
More evidence of the suppressive effects of photo ID is revealed in a new report released this week by the NAACP. This report examines the coordinated efforts to suppress the growing voting strength of communities of color, the poor, the elderly, the disabled and the young, and offers some important democracy-enhancing responses. Read/Download the full report here.
MEMBERSHIP AND LEADERSHIP
Thank You for Your Feedback on the LWVUS Membership Brochure (NEW)
We wanted to hear YOUR feedback and we did! Thanks to all of the League members who took the time to complete our short survey about the LWVUS membership brochure. The new version of the brochure will be available in spring 2012.
Reminder #3: Update Your Membership Rosters (NEW)
Summary sheets went live on November 1st! Changes you make in the LWVUS membership database will now be reflected in your League’s member count. Update your roster in the LWVUS membership database regularly from now until January 31, 2012, to ensure correct PMP billing and Convention delegate representation in 2012. Remember: Always include membership expiration dates. Have questions or need help? Email firstname.lastname@example.org.
League Says “No” to Anti-Environmental Riders on Budget Bills (NEW)
The League and coalition partners sent a letter to Senate and House leadership, opposing the attachment of any anti-environmental riders to the spending and tax bills that Congress is trying to get done before the end of the year.
LWVUS Legislative Priorities
In January, the LWVUS Board of Directors will be setting the League Legislative Priorities for the upcoming year. Once again, the Board is soliciting suggestions for LWVUS advocacy priorities from members. If you are interested in making suggestions to the Board, please refer to last week’s Update for full instructions.
