Dear League Leader:
Let’s fight back against the big money pouring into political campaigns this year. Let’s put the SuperPacs out of business. How? Sign the petition on The White House website urging President Obama to appoint new commissioners to the Federal Election Commission (FEC). NOTE: In order to successfully sign the petition, you will need to create an account on WhiteHouse.gov and respond to a confirmation email. If you need guidance on creating this account please use our helpful step-by-step guide to creating your account and signing the petition.
The FEC is supposed to be the government agency that enforces campaign finance laws, but it isn’t working and hasn’t for a long time. Of the six commissioners at the agency, three simply refuse to enforce the law, and five are serving despite the fact that their terms expired some time ago. It’s time to clean house and President Obama needs to do something about it.
We need at least 25,000 signatures of support by February 10, 2012 in order to get a response from The White House. Don’t just sign it yourself; post the petition on Facebook, Tweet about it and forward this message to all of your friends. Together, we can make sure that the votes of millions of Americans are more valuable to our elections than a big pile of money.

Bylaws Amendments Due on March 1 (NEW)
Part of the important business that delegates gathered at national convention must consider is whether to amend the LWVUS Bylaws. Redistricting: League Supports Citizens’ Appeal of Pennsylvania Plan (NEW)
The Pennsylvania League last week spoke out in support of 13 Pennsylvania voters who have filed an appeal, calling upon the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to reject the Legislative Reapportionment Commission’s redistricting plan for the State House and Senate. The plaintiffs are appealing on the grounds that the plan unconstitutionally splits communities and places incumbent protection before voters’ needs. The voters offered up an alternative plan for consideration by the court. Read the related news statements here.
Elections: Dead People Voting and Talking (NEW)
News reports from South Carolina and New Hampshire this past week claimed that dead people are voting. This is a voter suppression tactic used in the past and the claims have repeatedly been debunked. You may find these two items interesting: ‘Dead’ Voter Talking: O’Keefe Voter Fraud Stunt Confused 23-Year-Old for Dead 84-Year-Old. Learn more about the voter suppression tactic of claiming dead people vote in this Brennan Center investigation showing the claims to be false (see p. 14).
Elections: Dr. Martin Luther King's Legacy and Struggle for Voting Rights Honored (NEW)
The thousands who flocked to the South Carolina State House Monday to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy received a message that the fight for civil rights and voting equality is not relegated to history books. Read more here. The League published a blog post honoring Dr. King’s legacy.
“Patriocracy” Screened in New Hampshire and South Carolina (NEW)
A new documentary, “Patriocracy,” offers a non-partisan examination of the Washington dysfunction and hyper-partisanship undermining America's ability to tackle its most serious problems. Since the movie offers a compelling backdrop to the election year ahead, the LWVUS partnered with the New Hampshire and South Carolina Leagues to show the film prior to the primaries. President Elisabeth MacNamara led a panel discussion following each screening.
All Leagues are encouraged to sponsor their own public showings of this film, which will serve both educational and visibility objectives. Interested Leagues should contact Brian Malone, the producer and head of Malone Media Group, LLC, directly at firstname.lastname@example.org or 303-888-9649. A small charge is anticipated.
Brian Malone is a five-time Emmy® Award winner and has produced more than a dozen independent documentaries for broadcast and cable. His programs have aired nationally on PBS and cable networks, covering the gamut from Grammy-Award-Winning recording artists, to environmental issues, to Native American culture.
League Supports Keystone XL Pipeline Decision (NEW)
LWVUS Lobby Corps members will be carrying this League message when they visit U.S. Senate offices to urge Senators to oppose efforts to overturn Administration initiatives that protect public health and the environment, such as the new mercury and air toxics rule and the recent decision to block the Keystone XL pipeline.
