Happy League of Women Voters Day! (Hope you saw the mention about our founding on last week's 30 Rock?)
Our birthday wish this year is a special one. 2012 is an important election year and there is a great deal of work to be done to help register, educate and mobilize voters. That is why the League is launching an important campaign – Power the Vote!
League members and supporters nationwide will be working at every opportunity to ensure that the focus of this election is the voter. Power the Vote will:
Register new voters through community and high school voter registration efforts of local League members. Check out our brand new web video aimed at young voters. Be sure to share it with your friends, families and neighbors!
Educate voters through local and state candidate debates and at VOTE411.org, the League’s premier online voter and election information resource for 2012.
Protect voters by fighting against suppressive election laws, the big money in campaigns and the rise of Super PACs, and by strengthening the Elections Assistance Commission (EAC) and the Federal Election Commission (FEC).
We are already busy and working for voters nationwide. Just in the past month or so we have seen Leagues on the front lines protecting voters in places like Pennsylvania, Florida, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Virginia, Minnesota, New Mexico and Nebraska - so many that we can’t name them all! The League and its allies successfully gathered more than 25,000 petition signatures asking President Obama to appoint new commissioners to a dysfunctional FEC and help stem the tide of big money in campaigns.
This is an exciting year and one where we will need your help - so join us to Power the Vote! For all of those voters that still have primaries and caucuses coming up, be sure you register to vote.
Happy 92nd Birthday League of Women Voters!
