Write your Legislators about Education Bills

If you have not contacted your legislators, it is urgent to voice your support or opposition to the following bills as some movement is occurring daily.

SB 454 (David Pearce) to revise the distribution of state aid under the school foundation formula in the case where the formula has less than full funding. Passage of this bill is critical for making the necessary adjustments for funding this coming school year. The Senate debated SB 454 for several hours on April 18, but did not amend the bill or bring it to a vote. The League supports the bill. Contact your state senator.

SS/SCS/SB 576 (Bill Stouffer) regarding expansion of charter schools and charter school accountability and transparency was sent to the House on April 19 and first read. Second Reading on April 23. League believes sponsors should have more oversight, but believes charter schools should not be expanded statewide. Contact your state representative.

HB 1718 (Scharnhorst) Tuition tax credits for certain special needs students to attend non-public schools, out-of-district schools or home schooling. It was briefly debated on the House floor on April 18, but no vote taken.  May be taken up any time. League opposes.

SCS/SB 706 (Jane Cunningham) It is on the Senate Calendar Senate Bills for Perfection. It includes numerous provisions regarding school operations including Passport Scholarship language for students of unaccredited districts to attend non-public schools and authority for other districts or district cooperatives to operate charter schools in unaccredited districts. Please contact your Senator to support a substitute bill to remove the tuition tax credit, but also voice your opposition to the expansion of charter schools.

Please remember you are contacting your Legislator as an individual, not as a member of the League.
