Dear League Leader:
Every distinguished speaker who addressed Convention 2012 applauded the League for its devotion to political education and its faith that knowledge becomes power in the hands of voters. The League was urged to finish the fight to protect and empower voters.
This week, in Federal court, the League and its allies are working to finish the fight to protect Texas voters from an unnecessary and restrictive voter ID law. Over the next week, we also have the opportunity to flex our grassroots muscle in the U.S. Senate by demanding that our Senators vote for cloture on the DISCLOSE Act and debate the merits of giving voters the information they need in this election year to make up their own minds about the candidates and issues.
Our founding mothers understood that partisan pursuit of political power was antithetical to full and fair discussion of the interests of the broader public. The League has never supported or opposed candidates or parties and has never sought political power because the broader public needs somewhere to go to get all the facts. In this election year, the League is making a difference with every action alert, with every court appearance, and with every voter service effort. Working together, we can finish the fight to keep power in the hands of voters.
In League together making democracy safe for the nation,
POWER THE VOTE
LWVUS Has the Tools You Need to Power the Vote (NEW)
As you plan your election outreach and activities, we urge you to strive to meet the election year challenge the Board issued earlier this year. Online resources are provided with each challenge listed below! In 2012, we’re calling on every League to:
ACTION ALERT: DISCLOSE Act (NEW)
Tell your Senators to end the political games and bring S. 3369, the DISCLOSE Act of 2012, up for full debate. The U.S. Senate is expected to vote for cloture on the DISCLOSE Act of 2012, S. 3369, Monday, July 16. Please send a letter to your Senator asking them to support cloture so this important legislation can be brought to the floor for a full debate. Americans deserve all the information they can get before they vote.
EDUCATION FUND (Elections)
Elections: D.C. Court Hears Landmark Voting Rights Case (NEW)
This week a three-judge panel in Washington, DC, is hearing arguments in a case brought by the State of Texas, seeking to overturn a U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) decision to deny pre-clearance of Texas’s photo voter ID law. LWV of Texas (LWVTX) has joined the lawsuit in support of the DOJ position, and LWVUS and LWVTX issued a joint press release. Now that most state legislatures are out of session for the year, the battle against voter photo ID moves from the statehouses to the courts. Read our blog to learn about the League’s involvement in court challenges across the country.

REMINDER: Use Caution When Posting on Social Media Channels (NEW)
We’re excited to see so many Leagues getting involved on social media channels, like Facebook and Twitter, but we also want to remind Leagues to be careful when posting on these channels. As we get closer to the election, it’s important to use your utmost discretion when selecting articles to post and in monitoring the comments your “fans” leave on your posts. As a reminder, please consider adopting a policy similar to that found on the LWVUS Facebook page in order to outline expectations for appropriate behavior. Please use Impact on Issues as a guideline for appropriate topics and issues for posts, and refrain from posting on issues for which LWVUS has not issued a position. If you have any questions, please contact Stephanie Drahan (firstname.lastname@example.org).
LWVUS/EF Direct Marketing Schedule (NEW)
When planning your own League's fundraising, please consult the LWVUS/EF Direct Marketing Schedule. The LWVUS Development Office is pleased to share with you the FY 2012-13 LWVUS/Education Fund Direct Marketing schedule for direct mail and telemarketing. Download the schedule (located under Leadership Development Tools in the Members section of www.lwv.org). Please share this schedule with your Development chairs to assist planning for your League's fundraising activities. Questions should be directed to Rose Simmons, email@example.com.
Do You Need to Update Your Will?
Have you moved? Had a child? Gotten married recently? Or maybe there's a new grandchild or stepchild in your life? Any one of these major life events is reason enough to update your will. It is always important to stay in touch with your attorney regarding any changes in estate and probate law. While you're updating your plans, don't forget to include a gift for your favorite charities, like the League of Women Voters Education Fund – to strengthen the pillars of our democracy for years to come. If you have already included a gift for the LWV in your will or trust, but have not previously informed us, or if you have been thinking about setting up a gift that provides income, such as a charitable gift annuity, please contact the Development office by email or at 202-263-1355.
