Dear Supporter,

I am in Ohio today, on the first leg of my fall road trip to visit some 10 battleground states to observe and promote the great work being accomplished by League members like you. I’ll be meeting with elections officials, speaking with the media, attending conferences, helping register voters, and much, much more on these visits from September through Election Day.

But, a funny thing happened to me on my way to Ohio...

I was invited to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing and testified on “the Citizens United Court and the Continuing Importance of the Voting Rights Act!” So, yesterday, before hopping on an airplane to Ohio, I presented this testimony in Washington, DC. In my remarks, I strongly called on the federal government to step in to ensure that the rights of every eligible citizen to vote are protected if states are unable or unwilling to do so.

Check out our blog post some photos from the hearing, and watch the full hearing on this CSpan video. Also testifying were Attorney Michael Carvin, who spoke in support of the Citizens United decision and against Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, and former Montana Solicitor Anthony Johnstone, whose testimony concerned “the role of the Supreme Court in reviewing the constitutionality of ‘laws of democracy,’ including campaign finance regulation, election administration and voting rights enforcement.”

It’s apparent that our work is far from over, but it was an incredible opportunity to share the wonderful work being done by Leagues across the country. And, most importantly, it was great to have Capitol Hill provide a forum to discuss these important issues and for them to listen and learn.

You will hear more about my travel adventures in the coming weeks. In the meantime, keep on with your valuable work of registering and educating voters!

In League together making democracy work,

PRESIDENT'S CORNER

POWER THE VOTE: This Week's Challenge Activity (NEW)
It’s not too late to pursue a statewide or local online voters’ guide! Leagues from 29 states are currently participating in VOTE411 to create online voters’ guides in their communities and the number is still growing! Is your League interested in joining VOTE411, but you don’t know how to get started? LWVEF has resources online and we are happy to answer any of your questions. Watch the VOTE411 webinar here to learn more. And contact Megan Brown (mbrown@lwv.org) for more information. About 20 million voters were served through VOTE411 in 2008. Be a part of this growing program, help inform voters in your community this year and gain significant visibility for your League’s work!

ELECTIONS

Take the Challenge – Help Get 3 Friends Registered to Vote (NEW)
Join our registration challenge by sending our e-card to three friends, family members or co-workers encouraging them to register to vote or update their registration by visiting VOTE411.org

Voters’ Guide Information on Presidential Candidates (NEW)
In collaboration with some wonderful League volunteers from Maryland, we have again asked the candidates running for President to provide answers to some of the most pressing public policy questions. Those candidates that meet LWVUS’ criteria and are now officially each party’s nominee (Gary Johnson, Barak Obama, Mitt Romney and Jill Stein) have been invited to participate in this activity. Thanks to input from League members across the country we have also included a question specifically designed for low literacy publications for the first time. The Presidential information is now published on VOTE411, with additional information from the candidates being published as it is made available to us, and will appear for all states. Guidelines for using the Presidential Information in your voters’ guides and the data itself are available here.

Promote Your National Voter Registration Day Event on the Airwaves (NEW)
Has your League signed up to participate in National Voter Registration Day? If so, please share the good news with your local community by using the NVRD template press release and/or LWVEF’s general customizable voter registration press release. We can’t wait to hear how your National Voter Registration Day events turn out!

Upcoming Webinar: Moderating Debates LWV Style
On Saturday, September 22 at 10 am, ET, join former LWVUS President Kay J. Maxwell for a webinar on moderating debates! The public is hungry for factual information, and we want to make sure new League debate moderators are prepared to create the best debate experience possible for the public and the candidates. Register now to learn basic tips and techniques from one of our leading national experts!

Register for Truth in Campaign Advertising Conference Call Sept. 14 at Noon (NEW)
Please register here and join us for a conference call on Friday, Sept. 14, at Noon ET, with Meredith McGehee, a leading national reformer with experience in the media. We’ll be using our webinar system to share information and answer questions. As we noted in last week’s Update, Leagues around the country work hard to ensure that voters receive fact-based, nonpartisan information about elections. The massive flood of non-candidate (3rd Party) TV ads now washing over our airwaves threaten to spread misinformation and are leaving voters confused and disgusted – which may drive them to not to vote at all. LWVUS, in partnership with the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania, is launching the Truth in Campaign Advertising project, aimed at urging TV stations to minimize the level of misinformation in campaign ads.

Opportunity to Inspire and Educate Youth
Looking for a great way to educate high school and college students about the requirements to be President of the United States and how primaries, caucuses, general elections and the Electoral College work? LWVUS is partnering with the Office of Citizen Services and Innovative Technologies of the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) to add our logo to the winning entry of the Kids.gov poster contest. We will be sending your League a full-color poster to display at events, local libraries and schools along with a letter on how to order more posters at no cost to you. Look for these in the mail. Together we can Power the Vote! For more information, contact Pam Sterner (psterner@lwv.org).

Voter ID Laws Could Disenfranchise 1 Million Young Minority Voters (NEW)
An estimated 700,000 young minority voters could be barred from voting in November because of photo ID laws passed across the country in recent years, according to a new study.

Florida: Illegal Purge Update (NEW)
In a partial victory for voter rights’ groups, Florida residents who were mistakenly removed from the voter rolls this year because the state classified them as noncitizens will be returned to the rolls and allowed to vote in November. Read more here.

League Comments on Proposed Hydraulic Fracturing Rule (NEW)

You Need to Update Your Will?
Have you moved? Had a child? Gotten married recently? Or maybe there's a new grandchild or stepchild in your life? Any one of these major life events is reason enough to update your will. It is always important to stay in touch with your attorney regarding any changes in estate and probate law. While you're updating your plans, don't forget to include a gift for your favorite charities, like the League of Women Voters Education Fund – to strengthen the pillars of our democracy for years to come. If you have already included a gift for the LWV in your will or trust, but have not previously informed us, or if you have been thinking about setting up a gift that provides income, such as a charitable gift annuity, please contact the Development office by email or at 202-263-1355.

Donate to the League and support our work.
