League of Women Voters

Friend,

August 24, 2013 will be the 50th anniversary of the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.  In 1963, the March on Washington was the largest mass protest in American history and women and men, young and old from all different backgrounds came together to express their hopes for freedom, justice and change.

The League is a partner of the 50th anniversary celebration of this historic event. Join us as we come together to celebrate our past victories and continue the fight in the future.

The work that began 50 years ago continues today, especially in light of  the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to gut the Voting Rights Act (VRA). The decision to remove one of the VRA’s key enforcement mechanisms, erases fundamental protections against racial discrimination in voting that have worked to protect our democracy for over 40 years. Join us as we celebrate our past and raise our voices to continue the fight for justice and freedom.

What:    Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington

When:   Saturday, August 24, 2013 8 AM - 2:00 PM

Where:  The Lincoln Memorial, National Mall, Washington, DC

Buses from around the country will be coming to Washington DC to celebrate this historic event. League members should bring signs and banners to display during the march if possible. We also encourage you to wear League buttons. If you cannot attend in person, you can join the conversation via Facebook and Twitter.  Use the hash tag #Action4theDream to follow news and information leading up to and live from the event.
