The League Update

FEBRUARY 26, 2015

Dear Friend,

This week President Obama vetoed the Congressional effort to force approval of the Keystone XL pipeline. Once again, in response to an action alert, the League stepped up and made our voices heard on this critical issue, sending nearly 14,000 emails to President Obama.

While we may have won the battle, there is still the war. The U.S. State Department is still considering its recommendation for final approval of the pipeline. Once that is completed, President Obama will need to take the final step to approve or reject the pipeline. The League is urging the President to reject the Keystone XL pipeline because it is not in our national interest. It will threaten the safety of our drinking water, promote a bad energy policy and increase the greenhouse gases in our atmosphere that contribute to climate change. Even the Environmental Protection Agency has indicated that the pipeline will be a significant contributor to climate change if it is built. In short, the pipeline is all risk, no reward.

The League voice is critical to winning the war on Keystone XL. For 95 years, the League has recognized that protecting our environment means protecting the public health. The public health threat that this project represents cannot be overstated. In a time of falling energy prices, there could be no better opportunity to stand up for the health and well-being of Americans.
Let’s keep those digital cards and letters coming in. Let’s continue to remind President Obama of what he knows too well: there is no Planet B.

Action Alert: Urge the President to Fully Reject the Keystone XL Pipeline (NEW)
This week, President Obama fulfilled his promise to veto legislation approving the Keystone XL (KXL) pipeline! The League is proud to stand behind the President’s veto because the pipeline is not in our national interest. But the fight is not over–President Obama and the U.S. State Department must still make a final decision on the Keystone XL pipeline. Thank President Obama for vetoing the pipeline legislation and urge him to reject final approval of the Keystone XL pipeline once and for all!

Webinar Announcement: Putting Together a Local Action Plan (NEW)
The LWVUS Program Planning and Support (PP&S) Committee will put on a webinar March 25 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Advocacy Chair Chris Carson and state Leaders will outline the basics of creating a local action plan. You can register for the webinar here. For further information or questions, contact Betsy Lawson at blawson@lwv.org.

LEAGUE IS 95 YEARS STRONG - #LWVat95

Fun in Celebrating 95 years of Impact (NEW)
Cheers to Leagues that are celebrating 95 years of impact. Described as “Great times! Music video, discussion, food, picture funnies, raffle prizes, and cake," the LWV of Eastern Upper Peninsula (MI) marked this year’s milestone with fun! LWVUS has also been celebrating by highlighting the way suffragists used Valentine’s Day to advance the cause and our blog post got picked up both by Ms. and Buzzfeed! President MacNamara also wrote on her Huffington Post blog about the ways the League has impacted life in America. We've shared some great anniversary images on Facebook and hope to add pictures from your celebrations, too! Please send your photos to Renee Davidson (rdavidson@lwv.org) and share what your League is doing on #LWVat95, and use our sample social media content  or template press statement to excite your community and to promote your upcoming events.

Clearinghouse: State and Local Program Planning? Here’s the Plan (REMINDER)
With the start of the New Year, many Leagues often focus attention on state and local program planning. Visit the League Clearinghouse, a great resource for program planning, which features League studies in more than 50 subject areas that provide scope and focus of a topic, research methodology, sources consulted, information about positions, and consensus questions. Note: the Clearinghouse accepts positions without studies, even as multi-position documents, if they are accompanied by a single submission form. The description section could have "Resulting Position:" and the position statement or a link to the position. Complete studies are preferred, and Leagues may add study documents at a later date. Share your studies! Share our strength! Just a click away: http://clearinghouse.lwv.org
