League of Women Voters  Take Action

Dear Friend--

In 1970, the first Earth Day launched a long crusade to protect our beautiful natural resources through such legislation as the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. Forty-five years later, millions of Americans use Earth Day as a way to come together and celebrate the planet—and we have much to celebrate!

But our natural resources continue to come under attack. Tell Congress to continue to mark Earth Day by defending our vital natural resources and protecting public health against pollution.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is tasked with enforcing the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts. Under the direction of President Obama, they’ve worked to establish regulations that will reduce greenhouse gasses that cause climate change—like carbon dioxide, mercury and methane, and protect U.S. waters from pollution. These actions by the EPA are all made possible by the Clean Air and Water Acts, which were adopted soon after the first Earth Day. But big polluters continue to pressure Congress to stand in the way of the EPA and to block enforcement of our environmental protection laws.

The League of Women Voters has been at the forefront of the environmental protection movement for decades, consistently supporting legislation to preserve our nation’s natural resources and protect our public health. We support legislation that seeks to safeguard our country from the physical, economic and public health effects of climate change while also providing pathways to economic prosperity.
