“Disguised as a common-sense response to voter fraud—an essentially non-existent problem!—voter photo ID laws are in fact designed to suppress voter turnout.”

Dear Friend,

If anybody needs an insight into the real motivation behind voter photo ID laws, listen to a (now former) North Carolina Republican Party official’s unusually candid explanation:

“The law is going to kick the Democrats in the butt. … If it hurts a bunch of lazy blacks that want the government to give them everything, so be it.”

Disguised as a common-sense response to voter fraud—an essentially non-existent problem!— use of voter photo ID laws are in fact designed to suppress voter turnout.

The acceleration in the introduction of restrictive voting laws is among the worst fall-outs of the U.S. Supreme Court’s appalling Shelby decision, which gutted key provisions of the 1965 Voting Rights Act two years ago this month.

And they are one of the reasons I’m asking you to rush a generous contribution to the League’s new My Vote, My Right Campaign today.

We’ll put your gift to work immediately pressuring Congress to pass legislation to restore and repair the iconic Voting Rights Act.

We’ll fight efforts to pass new restrictive voting laws—last year we helped defeat 24 of them.

And we’ll work with people most affected by voting restrictions to help ensure they can cast their ballot and make sure it is counted.

For nearly a century, the League of Women Voters has fought to defend and expand the ultimate act of citizen engagement—casting a vote.

Today, we need you to help us defend that most basic right in any democracy.

Please, rush your most generous contribution to the League’s My Vote, My Right Campaign right now.

Thank you for standing with us—and defending the right to vote!

In League,

Elisabeth MacNamara
