We had a superb Legislative Seminar last week, attended by 80 members of the FLorida League, and
with a great distribution from around the state. Special thanks to Pam Goodman who was the key
organizer on this, the Tallahassee League for organizing our Tuesday night special event (a HOT TOPICS
on AMENDMENT 4), and all the professional support provided by Peg and Felisha! We had
an excellent range of legislators speak to us, including Senator Paula Dockery and
Senator Dan Gelber. Wayne Blanton, Exec Dir. of Florida School Board Association
spoke to us about class size and buget issues,as well as a number of important bills
facing our schools. John Hall, Exec Dir of Florida Center for Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform
spoke to us about the current efforts to fix and mostly undermine our tax structure, particularly
TABOR. Special thanks to Marilynn Wills and Ben Wilcox who coordinated our lobbying efforts.
Our members were seen everywhere, visiting their legislators, and being recognized on the
Floor of the Senate and the House by Senator Dockery and Rep. Skidmore (respectively).
CFO Sink, along with Governor Crist and Attny General McCollum presented the Florida League with a resolution for
our 90 years of work, and our members were busy all across the Capitol. Please read below to see the letter we sent
to President Atwater expressing our concern over a diminishing level of civility in the Legislature witnessed by
A few notes also from our Board Meeting which was held just prior to Seminar. At that meeting the Board approved
the Transportation concurrency, thus adopting the positions of Tallahassee, Orange and Seminole as part of our state
Study and Action. Local Leagues are now free to use these positions for their local work on transportation. For those
of you who are able to attend LEADERS COUNCIL, you will have the chance to learn more about our Transportation
Study, and hope you will get involved!
On another issue, we have been very pleased to receive several requests from around the state for
Ben Wilcox to come and speak to our Local Leagues. While we would like to be able to
cover these costs within the state budget, our budget does not permit this, and our contract calls
for his time to be focused on presenting our issues to the legislature.
In order to set a policy that would be fair to all Leagues, the state board approved a $200
stipend plus any pre arranged expenses for Ben Wilcox to speak
at Local League events. We hope you will be interested in having Ben speak.
Please contact Ben Wilcox directly at firstname.lastname@example.org
to engage him as a speaker at one of your HOT TOPICS.
NEWS IN FAIR DISTRICTS:
Florida Association of Counties joined the Florida League of Cities in endorsing FairDistricts Amendments 5 and 6.
Please continue to work on setting up speaker corps on this issue. (There will be a seminar at COUNCIL
providing all materials and training on this) Also, we are continuing to look for endorsements by local officials.
