PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Dear League Leaders:

It is hard to believe that Election Day is just five days away! It has been a long and busy election year in which a lot has happened, some anticipated, and some not. But through it all, the League has maintained its tradition of fairness, inclusiveness and emphasis on nonpartisan citizen education. We have been in the news throughout this season on issues related to voter registration and voter education. You may access additional media coverage here.

Having completed my visits to nine key states this election season, I have seen how hard we are all working to make sure that voters have the tools they need to cast an informed ballot. Please share your election activities on the League’s Facebook page so everyone will know what great work you are doing this Election season. We want to hear from you today!

Early voting is going on as we speak, and Leagues are staffing hot lines, distributing voter guides, directing voters to Vote411.org and holding forums. Hang in there! It’s almost over. Thank you for all the hard work and for standing up to the special interests at all levels. You can and do make a difference every day!

Proudly in League,

Elisabeth

ELECTIONS
Please note that we have added this special section for the duration of the 2010 election season.

League Urges Voters to Prepare for Election Day 2010 (NEW)
The League urges voters to take advantage of our one-stop-shop – VOTE411.org – for Election Day information.

Show Your League Pride on Election Day (NEW)
Don’t forget to wear a little League “bling” this Election Day when you go to the polls! Put on your favorite League button, pin, hat, scarf or shirt to show your League pride. Be prepared to tell interested individuals about the value of League membership and carry a membership brochure or some Give and Take Business Cards (scroll to bottom of the webpage) to hand out to potential members. Election Day is the perfect time to recruit new politically-minded and community-involved members! (N.B. If you are serving in an official capacity on Election Day, e.g., poll worker, there may be rules governing what you can or cannot wear. Please check with your jurisdiction.)

More New VOTE411 Widgets! (NEW)
The LWVUS has developed additional new VOTE411 widgets that local Leagues can use in their promotional election efforts. Download and use our VOTE411 widgets on your website, feature them in your upcoming press releases, and share them with your media partners and other community organizations. These widgets are free for anyone to use.

At the Polls: Use Your Experience to Inspire Improvements
Many League members work at the polls on Election Day, giving us a unique opportunity to assess the ergonomics of polling places around the country. During your time at the polls, take note of what runs better and use that assessment to build your post-election relationships with local elections officials. As a reminder of the issues that may affect the efficiency of the voting process, this month we are highlighting studies that may help inspire positive changes for the next round. Resources: U.S. Elections Assistance Commission video on polling place management and article on ballot design.

Media Template to Engage Voters Available
Be sure to let the public know about the great League resources available this election season, especially VOTE411.org and your local debates, etc. The LWVUS has created a template that you can customize and share with local media outlets to help educate citizens and get them out to vote. Please share this piece widely, especially with outlets that speak to traditionally underserved populations. Go beyond the “standard” media outlets in your community. Consider student newspapers, popular radio stations, ethnic media outlets, online publications, etc.

Help Plan for the Next 90 Years of the League!
Some things never change even in these challenging economic times. The League of Women Voters Education Fund continues to be at the forefront of public policy issue education which allows citizens to thoughtfully engage in the democratic process. By making a gift of cash or securities of $5,000 or more to the LWVEF Pooled Income Fund, you can receive an immediate income tax deduction for a portion of the gift's value and continue earning a quarterly return on the interest earned for life. Best of all, you can name your state and/or local League, along with the LWVEF, to benefit from the residual funds when you're gone. For more information, please contact the Development office at 202-263-1355 or plannedgiving@lwv.org.
