PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Dear League Leaders:

On this Veterans Day, as we honor courageous men and women, let us reflect on the meaning of patriotism. Those who have served in our armed forces throughout history have made great sacrifices to preserve and protect our fundamental right to be free of the kind of tyranny that dictates thought and speech and measures loyalty only in terms of outward signs such as pledges and salutes.

For ninety years, League members have made our democracy work at the most fundamental level by enabling eligible voters to register, providing nonpartisan voter information, and offering opportunities for candidates and voters to engage each other before and after elections.

Our efforts were marred this year because a number of candidates refused to engage voters either through voter guides or candidate forums, while some, who did choose to participate, engaged in or encouraged unseemly behavior. Nevertheless, the election is over, and those elected to represent us must now govern, which involves listening to the entire constituency, not just supporters.

To help prepare the League for future elections, the LWVUS is gathering stories of challenges and successes you experienced while conducting League activities during the 2010 election seasons. We ask you to take a minute to fill out this brief online form and share your 2010 election story.

Please also plan on meeting with your congressional delegation and other elected leaders as soon as possible. This is a great opportunity to educate your elected officials on the mission and work of the League and to remind them that we are all in this together, looking for solutions to the issues confronting this great country.

In League,

Elisabeth

LWVUS Privatization Study Committee (NEW)
In accordance with direction from Convention 2010, the LWVUS will undertake a study of “Privatization: the policy agenda to transfer government functions, services and assets to the private sector.” This study will focus on the impact of privatizing government services on local communities. Committee members will be responsible for developing study materials and consensus questions and reviewing/tabulating responses submitted by participating Leagues. Based on the submitted responses, the Committee will recommend position language to the Board. If you are interested in being a member of the Study Committee, please complete the online application form and submit it along with your resume no later than December 16, 2010.

Update Your Will
Have you recently moved to a new state? Had a child? Did you get married last year? Or maybe there's a new grandchild or step-child in your life? Any one of these major life events is reason enough to update your will. It is always important to stay in touch with your attorney regarding any changes in estate and probate law. While you're updating your plans, don't forget to include a gift for your favorite charities, like the League of Women Voters Education Fund - to strengthen the pillars of our democracy for years to come. If you have already included a gift for the LWV in your will or trust, but have not previously informed us, or if you have been thinking about setting up a gift that provides income, such as a charitable gift annuity, please contact Lauren Frank by email or at 202-263-1355.
