PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Dear League Leaders:

As the Board meets next week and considers, among other things, LWVUS advocacy priorities for the year, I want to thank all who responded to our request for input. All comments will be reported to and considered by the Board. Member interest is a key component in setting priorities along with considerations of what legislation is likely to arise and where the LWVUS is likely to have its greatest impact. As with everything else we do, at all levels of the organization, it is essential to set priorities in order to focus our resources effectively.

In the meantime, we continue to follow the health care debate closely. Yesterday, the House voted 245-189 to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Today, the League sent a letter to the Senate urging that body to oppose repeal of the Act, and the LWVUS Lobby Corps is visiting Senate offices this month with our message. It’s now critical that you weigh in, too, and tell your Senators to oppose repeal of the Affordable Care Act. As provisions of the Act are being implemented, more and more Americans are getting health care coverage while health care costs are reduced for individuals, businesses and communities. Please also encourage your family, friends and coworkers to join in this urgent effort.

In League,

Elisabeth

MEMBERSHIP & LEADERSHIP

Request for YOUR Feedback on the LWVUS Online Store (NEW)
The LWVUS wants to identify ways to better meet the needs of state and local Leagues for LWV-branded products.  Help us by completing this quick and easy online survey. Your feedback will help us improve allocation of our limited resources and our store services for you. Thank you!

Only 1 Week Left to Update Your Membership Roster (Reminder #7)
On January 31, your League’s membership count will be “frozen,” and this number will determine the amount of PMP your League will remit to the state and national Leagues for FY2011-12. Remember to update all membership expiration dates and the status field (“I” or “A”).  If you have questions, would like to schedule a training session or need help accessing the database, please email membership@lwv.org.

“The Welcoming League” Webinar Online (NEW)
Thanks to all who participated in last week’s highly successful webinar that explored ways to make Leagues more welcoming to new members and to invigorate our current members. Special thanks go to LWVUS Board Member Marcia Merrins who conducted this important session available online here.

Resources for Nominating Committees (NEW)
Remember that there are important resources for nominating committees, including the “Little Green Book…Everything You Need to Know about the Job of the Nominating Committee” plus a webinar presentation. Access these resources here. We thank all those serving on nominating committees for their important work in identifying League leaders!

Online Store Sale Extended!
It’s not too early to start thinking about small gifts for your convention speakers, your outgoing board members and other special guests. Our Holiday sale was so successful that we are extending it through February 28. Inventories are low so please order early.

IRA Holders Can Still Make 2010 Charitable Distributions
Persons aged 70½ or older can again enjoy tax savings by making charitable gifts directly from their Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs), thanks to a provision of the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010, which was signed into law December 17, 2010. The act also allows charitable distributions made from an IRA in January 2011 to be declared as 2010 gifts, should the IRA holder wish to do so. Please contact Lauren Frank at 202-263-1355 or lfrank@lwv.org for additional information.

Leaving a Legacy
Including the League of Women Voters Education Fund in your will is among the easiest ways to offer support of the LWVEF's work for years to come. We suggest the following language to include the League as a beneficiary of a will or trust: " I give, devise, and bequeath to the League of Women Voters Education Fund, a charitable organization formed in the District of Columbia, with offices at 1730 M Street, NW, Washington, DC, 20036, {the sum of $___ } {___ percentage of my residuary estate}." If you already have a will, you can have your attorney add a codicil to include the LWVEF. After you've added the League, please contact Lauren Frank so we can list you as a member of our Carrie Chapman Catt Legacy Society.
