Do You Need to Update Your Will?

PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Dear League Leader:

Don’t forget next Monday is tax day. Earlier this week, I sent a message to “check the box” on your tax return again this year to support the Presidential Election Campaign Fund. The Fund was set up as an alternative way to pay for presidential elections, cut corruption by ending presidential candidates’ dependence on contributions from special interests and ensure that “regular” citizens’ voices are heard. We face tremendous challenges, and now more than ever, it’s imperative that citizens – not corporations – are making the decisions for our country. Please “check the box” when you file your tax return and encourage others to do the same.

Also, Earth Day (April 22) is coming up next week. And how appropriate that Clean Air Act enforcement wasn’t gutted in last week’s budget deal! Earth Day is a solid opportunity to take action and engage your community on this issue. I hope you will use this Earth Day letter- to-the-editor template. The LWVUS Toolkit for Climate Change is a wonderful resource, containing materials to support your League’s work on one of our 2011 advocacy priorities – Clean Air Defense. The toolkit provides background information and suggestions of things your League can do to help safeguard the Environmental Protection Agency's ability to establish the urgently needed protections called for by the Clean Air Act.

And finally, yes, this is National Volunteer Week! And, yes, this was the topic of last week’s message. But it’s one that deserves repeating. League members belong to that cadre of volunteers, who serve their communities and the nation unstintingly year after year. You deserve to be celebrated again and again. So once more, thank you for all that you do!

In League,

Elisabeth

MEMBERSHIP & LEADERSHIP

It’s National Volunteer Week: Thank Your Volunteers (NEW)
National Volunteer Week honors individuals who dedicate themselves to taking action in their communities. Be sure to recognize and thank your volunteers for their service to the League! Send them a thank-you email, a personal note or card, and if an opportunity arises, publicly thank them. Keep it fun and let them know how much their time and efforts are appreciated – this week and throughout the year!

Don’t Forget to Update Your League’s Officers and Dues Rates!
Please update your new officers’ information in the LWVUS database to ensure new leaders do not miss communications from your state and the LWVUS. Remember to record your League's dues rate by following the instructions to UPDATE LEAGUE officers. Find instructions on how to make these changes here. If you have any questions or need help, contact Betty Taira.

Publicize Your Annual Meeting (NEW)
Use your Annual Meeting to gain League visibility in your community. Publicize this important League event by inviting the community to attend and sending out a press release about the decisions made after the event. If you missed our March 17 webinar, “Making Your Annual Meeting Productive and Fun,” the recording is available here. Listen and watch Board member Marcia Merrins discuss how to have your most successful and enjoyable annual meeting to date! More annual meeting resources are available here, and a sample script is available here.

Do You Need to Update Your Will?
Have you moved? Had a child? Gotten married recently? Or maybe there's a new grandchild or step-child in your life? Any one of these major life events is reason enough to update your will. It is always important to stay in touch with your attorney regarding any changes in estate and probate law. While you're updating your plans, don't forget to include a gift for your favorite charities, like the League of Women Voters Education Fund - to strengthen the pillars of our democracy for years to come. If you have already included a gift for the LWV in your will or trust, but have not previously informed us, or if you have been thinking about setting up a gift that provides income, such as a charitable gift annuity, please contact Lauren Frank by email or at 202-263-1355.
